Do you know what happened to me today? I wanted to write. And then I got sucked into Instagram and Facebook, and everyone, and almost every post was something about Valentine’s Day.  And I found myself really irritated by it. Who made up this one day so some (very few!) people can feel awesomely loved, and some people can feel a deep pressure to express love that they feel, and others just feel like crap because they want to feel loved and no-one is showing it to them (at least not in the ways that we are told it should be.) So I said to myself, I’m not going to mention Valentine’s Day or love or anything to do with any of it.

And then I realized that all my thoughts are consumed with how stupid this all is. I am obsessed with how obsessed the world around me is, with a holiday, that isn’t really a holiday that sends out messages that we are not enough and what we have isn’t enough. Time to laugh at myself for sure.

But seriously, the only thing I do want to say is: forget this specific day. Love is for remembering every day. Everyone is deserving of love and there are so many different kinds of love: love from a parent to a child, love for ones’ siblings, love for ones’ partner, love for your family, love for your friends, love for the community around you, love for your work, love for the creative paths you follow, love for nature, love for God, love for our own self, love for all of humankind. Love for our pets. For heaven’s sake! The list goes on! Does Valentine’s day hold all of that? Does that Hallmark card that cost you $7 sum it up perfectly? Or a box of chocolates?

So forget Valentines’ Day and find what and who you love as defined by you, and show it any way you want, any time you want. Your way is good enough. You are enough. Love is enough.
